Biography

José De Gregorio is currently Dean of the School of Economics and Business, Professor of the Department of Economics at the University of Chile.
He was President of the Central Bank between 2007 and 2011, Vice President (2003-2007) and Counselor (2001-2003) of that institution. From March 2000 to June 2001 he served as Tri-Minister in the portfolios of Economy, Mining and Energy.
Between 1997 and 2000 he was Professor and Director of Graduate Studies at the Center for Applied Economics at the University of Chile. He was also Professor at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile; Visiting Professor at the Anderson School of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and has taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
He was also a Member of the Executive Board of the Latin American Doctoral Program in Economics, jointly organized by the ITAM of Mexico, the Universidad Torcuato di Tella of Argentina, and the Universidad de Chile. He was a Member of the Executive Committee of the Latin American and Caribbean Economic Association (LACEA) and was Co-Director of the Organizing Committee of the annual meeting of LACEA in 1999. Between 1994 and 1997 he was Coordinator of Economic Policies at the Ministry of Finance of Chile.
He was an Economist in the Research Department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) during 1990 and 1994.

He has also been a consultant for international organizations such as the IMF, World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), United Nations and foreign companies. He was also a Visiting Researcher at the IMF and the World Bank. Between 1983 and 1986 he was a Researcher at CIEPLAN. He has published extensively in international academic journals and books on monetary policy, exchange rates, international finance and economic growth, and has served as a referee and member of editorial boards of academic journals.
