The year 2025 concluded with 13 Chilean economists ranked within the top 5% of the most cited researchers globally, according to the IDEAS/RePEc historical index—one of the most prestigious benchmarks for measuring academic impact in the field of economics. Among Chilean institutions, the leader remains José De Gregorio, Dean of the School of Economics and Business (FEN) at the University of Chile, who holds the 988th position in the global rankings.
The ranking, which can be analyzed through either career-long historical output or more recent “windows” of productivity, reaffirms the dominance of established names in the international economic discourse. Leading the Chilean contingent abroad are Ricardo Caballero (MIT), ranked 116th globally, and Sebastián Edwards (UCLA) at 215th.
For FEN, the latest figures underscore the sustained influence of its faculty. Beyond De Gregorio, the list features Professor Eduardo Engel (1,743) and academic Alejandro Micco (3,326). The ranking also includes prominent researchers such as Damian Clarke and Claudio Raddatz, alongside Yale Professor Christopher Neilson (a FEN alumnus and “Circle of Honor” inductee) and University of Maryland Professor Sergio Urzúa, who also shares ties to the institution.
This year-end milestone is accompanied by a strong report on scientific productivity. According to data from the University of Chile, FEN recorded a total of 66 publications in 2025. These include entries in the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) and a leading number of publications in the Web of Science, marking the highest output for any such institution in the country.
